Josh Longstaff Named NBA G League Coach of the Month

ERIE, PA – Erie BayHawks head coach Josh Longstaff has been named NBA G League Coach of the Month, it was announced today. The honor is Coach Longstaff’s first as an NBA G League head coach.

“It’s an honor for all of us here with the BayHawks to be recognized by the NBA G League for our performance during the month of January,” said Coach Josh Longstaff. “This is a direct reflection of the hard work and high-level of play that our players have showcased over the past month. It’s also a tribute to the assistant coaches, performance staff and support staff for the culture that they’ve created here in Erie. The same environment that they’ve created in Atlanta – a culture that promotes growth for our players and staff.”

The Erie BayHawks are currently riding a four-game winning streak, which is their longest winning streak of the 2017-18 season. Over the month of January, Erie notched an 8-3 (.727) total record, which is tied for the second-most wins and tied for second-best record of the month. Of the BayHawks 11 games in January, they compiled a 6-1 (.857) record against opponents with winning records, which included two wins against their Southeast Division rival Lakeland Magic.

Other notable games included a nationally-televised, 130-115, win at the NBA G League Showcase over the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. Heading into the game, the Vipers sat at 18-9 (.667), to Erie’s 11-15 (.423) overall record. In the win, Erie set season-highs in total points scored in a game, excluding overtime (130), made field goals (48), made three-pointers (18) total points in a first half (69), total points in a second quarter (38) and steals in a game (17). Also at the NBA G League Showcase, the BayHawks pulled down a season-high 24 offensive rebounds against the Northern Arizona Suns on January 10. Erie’s 24 offensive rebounds marked a season-high for offensive rebounds in a single game in the NBA G League this season.

On January 27 at Westchester, Erie overcame a 15-point deficit to take a 120-112 win. The BayHawks shot a season-high tying .537 (44-82) shooting from the field, including season-best .586 (17-29) from beyond the arc. Coming into that game, the Knicks held a 22-11 (.667) record. The BayHawks also poured in a third quarter season-best 37 points over the Delaware 87ers in a 128-123 overtime win on Saturday, January 20. The win marked Erie’s first overtime win of the season.

Over the month of January, Erie finished top 10 in eight statistical categories. The BayHawks recorded 6.6 blocks per game (third-best), 9.6 steals per game (sixth-best), dished out 23.0 assists per game (eighth-best), pulled down 11.8 offensive rebounds per contest (eighth-best), poured in 110.3 points per contest (eighth-best) on .364 shooting from three-point territory (eighth-best) and 11.9 made triples per game (ninth-best). Erie also held its opponents to an average of 107.6 points per game (10th lowest).

The BayHawks currently hold a 17-16 (.515) overall record and are tied with the Lakeland Magic for the top spot in the Southeast Division. Erie’s 17 wins so far this season marks the first time since the 2014-15 campaign the BayHawks have won at least 17 games.

Erie’s four-game homestand continues this weekend, as the Long Island Nets and Raptors 905 come to town for a pair of home games. This Saturday, February 3, will be Atlanta Hawks Affiliate Night. Atlanta Hawks legend Dominique Wilkins will be in attendance, as well as appearances by the Atlanta Hawks mascot, Harry the Hawk, and members of the Hawks dance team. The BayHawks will wear retro-style Atlanta Hawks inspired uniforms that will be auctioned during the game. All proceeds from the uniform auction will benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Erie.
