Erie BayHawks Complete Trade with Rio Grande Valley Vipers

Erie, PA – The Erie BayHawks, NBA G League affiliate of the Atlanta Hawks Basketball Club, completed a trade with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers to acquire the returning player rights of R.J. Hunter. Rio Grande Valley will receive the returning player rights of Jonathan Gibson, along with Erie’s fourth-round pick in the 2018 NBA G League Draft.

Hunter (6-5, 186), appeared in 45 games (28 starts) for the Vipers during the 2017-18 campaign, registering 20.4 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.4 steals in 30.8 minutes of action (.443 FG%, .377 3FG%, .803 FT%). He signed a two-way contract with the Houston Rockets on January 14, 2018, playing in five games (one start) for the Rockets last season, recording 3.8 points in 9.0 minutes.

Having seen action in 82 NBA G League contests (51 starts) over his three-year career, Hunter owns career averages of 18.9 points, 3.2 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.4 steals in 30.8 minutes of play (.416 FG%, .351 3FG%, .786 FT%). He has also appeared in 44 NBA contests (one start), netting 2.6 points in 8.4 minutes.

Originally selected by the Boston Celtics with the 28th overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft, Hunter enjoyed a three-year playing career at Georgia State University. He ranks first all-time in total points (1,819), made free throws (448), free throw percentage (.853) and made three-point field goals (253), as well as third in steals (191), made field goals (559) and games started (98). Hunter was a two-time All-America honorable mention honoree, two-time Sun Belt Male Athlete of the Year and two-time first-team All-Sun Belt.
